san José

San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica which, amazingly for such a small country, has more biodiversity than the either the whole of Europe or North America. Costa Rica also has some of the worlds most active volcanoes, powerful rivers and great beaches on both Caribbean and Pacific coast lines.

San Jose lies at an altitude of 1,160m and has comfortable temperatures year round. The city initially grew from tobacco and coffee plantations to become one of the youngest and smallest capital cities in Latin America with a population just 350,000 people. Now San Jose has become a cosmopolitan city due to the friendliness of the “Ticos” (Costa Ricans) and due to the fact that Costa Rica has been politically stable and moderate much longer than most of its Central American neighbors.
