Medellin is known as “the city of eternal spring” – due to the remarkably consistent spring climate year round. As Colombia’s second largest city Medellin is an important international trade centre, and has world class surgery and science.
The city is also a cultural hub and has some of Colombia best universities, museums and libraries. There is impressive modern architecture as well as older colonial buildings and Medellin was home to Colombia’s most famous artist and sculptor: Fernando Botero. The city is served by a new, fast and efficient metro system, complete with cable cars to the top of the surrounding mountains that provide impressive views over the city.
Medellin is the capital of the state of Antioquia which has many Spanish colonial towns and villages within easy reach. The 200m high Piedra del Peñol is a ridiculously over-sized rock situated in the middle of picturesque lakes near the town of Guatape and is not to be missed if you're in the area. With a vibrant live music scene and legendary nightlife Medellin is becoming very popular with foreigners who choose to make Colombia their home. Paisa’s (The people of Medellin and Antioquia) and predominantly of European descent and are some of the friendliest people you could hope to meet. The accent is clear and neutral – all in all it’s a great place to travel, live and learn Spanish.
