bogota

Known as the “Athens of South America” due to its impressive architecture, libraries and museums, and thousand of festivals and cultural events - Bogota is a great place to stay & explore. With one of the clearest and most neutral accents of the Spanish speaking world Bogota is a good place to learn Spanish. As a sprawling cosmopolitan metropolis of over 8m people there is always something new to do.

For tourists and locals alike, there is always a great variety of activities in Bogota to ensure you have a great time! These include international standard museums, libraries, theaters & parks and there are also theme parks and retreats in and around the city. The zona rosa in the north has many great restaurants and bars.

Despite its size Bogota is still surrounded by beautiful forested mountains - visible from virtually everywhere in the city making it hard to lose your bearings. Why not take a trip to Monserrate to take in the entire cityscape?. The city was recently graded as an important economic centre on the same level as Los Angeles, Berlin and San Francisco. At 2640m Bogota is the worlds 3rd highest capital city and due to its high altitude Bogota has a surprisingly cool climate year round despite its proximity to the equator.

The Cathedral has many ornate carvings and atmospheric lighting and there is also a museum, restaurants and Colombia’s largest artificial climbing wall. The Cathedral is one of the most important tourist attractions in Colombia.

Guatavita lake is a circular lake in the mountains north east of Bogota. There are some theories that the lake was formed by a meteorite but the origins remain unproven. The lake however has a fascinating history: it was used by the local Music population in ceremonies where their leader was covered in gold dust before diving into the Lake to wash it off. The people then threw gold trinkets and artifacts into the lake as an offering to their gods. The rumor of gold at the bottom of the lake led to the famous 'Legend of Eldorado'. Since the conquistadores first tried to find gold in the lake there many attempts to drain the lake in search of gold.
